Doctoral student Mike McCarthy was highlighted in a new feature from the UW Graduate School that focuses on how he is using his graduate education to redefine what it means to be a good leader and educator. McCarthy's military background and current role as a district director have given him experiences that continue to shape his approach to both. He is in his final year of the Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership program and is also a recipient of the Pat Tillman fellowship granted to military members, veterans and their spouses.

Assistant professor of Education Foundations, Leadership and Policy David Knight is quoted in an article by the Seattle Times, along with Professor of Education Finance Marguerite Roza, titled Washington students’ test scores drop significantly in first exams since pandemic began. Regarding the drop in state test scores, he stated “I would say that it’s not good news — but not entirely surprising. We know that poverty is the biggest impediment to success in the classroom,” said Knight. “Low-income households were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. I think the important thing now is that we not let up in our pursuit to close gaps.”

Preschool teacher Kimi Tseng, a 2014 graduate of UW's program, is featured in a story about the benefits of a bilingual learning environment.
