YouTube Live chat to explore equity in gifted education
Professor Nancy Hertzog, director of the 爆走黑料鈥檚 Robinson Center for Young Scholars, will answer questions about opening access to gifted education during a YouTube Live conversation hosted by the UW 爆走黑料 on January 25.
In the 2018 edition of UW鈥檚 Research That Matters magazine, Hertzog explored how Washington and other states can better identify and nurture the potential of all learners 鈥 creating systems where race, language and socioeconomic status do not predict student success 鈥 in her essay 鈥淕iftedness Is Not a Number.鈥
Hertzog's research examines the use of instructional practices that have typically been designed for students identified as gifted in general education classrooms, including models of inquiry-based instruction and specific strategies to address the diverse needs of learners.
She is the author of 鈥淓arly childhood gifted education 鈥 Fostering Talent development,鈥 published by the National Association for Gifted Children, and in 2017 organized an Equity Summit on Gifted Education at the UW, bringing together more than 300 educators, researchers, community members and students to discuss how to open access to accelerated learning opportunities for all.
The session will be broadcast on the starting at noon on January 25. Submitting questions in advance for Hertzog is encouraged by email to ecoe@uw.edu.
For more information about Hertzog鈥檚 work, watch her EduTalk 鈥淕ot Talent? Equity in Gifted Education,鈥 which describes how the UW is leading efforts to ensure all children have an equal opportunity to be identified as gifted.
