UW projects featured in NSF "STEM for All" showcase
Four ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ projects focused on expanding access to great STEM teaching and learning were featured during this year's
The open and free event features three-minute video presentations from more than 150 projects aimed at improving STEM education that are funded by the National Science Foundation. The public was invited to view the videos, join the discussion online with presenters, and vote for the most effective presentations May 17-23.
UW ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ projects featured are:
- is an afterschool STEM learning program for low income and immigrant middle and high school students. Professor Leslie Herrenkohl, UW undergraduate mentors, and staff at the Neighborhood House, a multiservice community based organization, discuss this partnership to offer youths opportunities to learn and explore opportunities in STEM.
- have the power to build and advance knowledge of teaching. Professor Jessica Thompson and partner educators from Highline Public Schools describe key features of NICs that aim to improve and adapt teaching practice, theories of student learning, and practical measures.
- Through a partnership between UW learning scientists and Seattle and Renton school districts, young learners are getting the opportunity to engage with engineering design in ways that are culturally and personally relevant. In the featured project, of causal loop diagramming, helping them make connections between previous lessons, ideas and their own lives.
- A research-practice partnership, the California Tinkering Afterschool Network, brought together STEM researchers and afterschool maker educators to co-investigate , and what kinds of professional learning educators needed to ensure making is productive and equitable for all learners.
Honored with a Presenters' Choice award was "Making is Fun But Are They Learning" while Facilitators' Choice awards were presented to "STUDIO: Build Our World" and "Engaging All Students in Meaningful Engineering Instruction."
