Together Undaunted: Uniting for equity and excellence

Nearly 200 educators, community leaders and education advocates joined UW ��ߺ�� faculty and students on Dec. 2 to discuss their shared dedication to equity, inclusion and access in schools.

During the College's "Together Undaunted" event at the Northwest African American Museum in Seattle's Central District, community members met new dean Dr. and learned about the College's focus on building deep, authentic partnerships with schools and communities.

In her remarks, Tuan highlighted the College's commitment to challenging assumptions, to being touchable, and to being accountable. She noted that a common thread running through work pursued by UW ��ߺ�� faculty is a commitment to being an equitable partner.

"That means making a pledge that we will listen, that we will learn from and we will respect the individuals, the organizations and the communities we work with," Tuan said. "We work with, not on people."

Community members also heard from , assistant professor of education, about the UW's in the Road Map Region of South Seattle/South King County. The project brought together families, educators, community organizations and UW researchers to create new avenues for historically marginalized parents and communities to collaborate with schools in efforts to improve student learning.

, associate professor of education, discussed a new initiative he's leading that builds upon that work. The Brotherhood Initiative, now in its initial phases, will build intergenerational relationships among males in African American, Native American, Hispanic, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities to support the success of younger males.
