Symposium to examine education of black males
On Jan. 11, the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ's will sponsor its 27th annual symposium, "Black Male(d): Peril and Promise in the Education of African American Males."
About the Symposium
At a time when ongoing conversations have been sparked by the Black Lives Matter movement and recent events across the country affecting black males, Professor Tyrone C. Howard will examine the challenges and the promise in the education of African American males. Drawing from extensive data, Howard will share insights from his book on black males. His presentation will describe conceptual, empirical and practical interventions that school leaders, practitioners and concerned community members can use to improve the schooling experiences and outcomes for African American males, one of the nation’s most marginalized student groups.
The symposium will take place in the Yukon Pacific Room of the from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The symposium will follow by a book signing.
About Tyrone C. Howard
Tyrone C. Howard is professor of education and associate dean for equity and inclusion in the School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. He is the director and founder of the Black Male Institute at UCLA, an interdisciplinary cadre of scholars, practitioners, community members and policymakers dedicated to improving the educational experiences and life chances of black males. Howard’s research is concerned primarily with the achievement of youth in urban schools. He is the author of numerous articles and two books published by Teachers College Press, Why Race and Culture Matter in Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap in America’s Classrooms and Black Male(d): Peril and Promise in the Education of African American Males, both of which are in the Multicultural Education Series edited by James A. Banks, the Kerry and Linda Killinger Endowed Chair in Diversity Studies and founding director of the UW Center for Multicultural Education.

About the Center for Multicultural Education
The Center for Multicultural Education at the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ was established in 1992 and focuses on research projects and activities designed to improve practice related to equity issues, intergroup relations and the achievement of all students.
