Educators, parents and community members are invited to join a conversation about how to open access to advanced learning opportunities during the ���ߺ���’s , taking place Feb. 9 and 10.

“We need to take a look at what we are doing—from the very minute kids are born and throughout school—to make sure all children have access to the kinds of experiences that will enable them to excel,” said , professor of education and director of the UW Robinson Center for Young Scholars.

Hertzog said topics were selected based on input from superintendents and directors of highly capable programs across Washington State, with an eye toward addressing the disconnect between policies designed to serve all gifted students and those historically disenfranchised by race, ethnicity, culture or language. Sessions include:

• Providing Equitable Access to Quality Early Learning Environments
• Breaking the Language Barrier
• Student Voices and Experiences
• State Initiatives – Professional Development
• Access From East to West: Context Matters
• Racial Equity Lens
• Equity Leadership and Policy Initiatives: Next Steps

Experts from both the UW ���ߺ��� and across the country will speak during the summit, with time during each session set aside for discussion among participants.

Hertzog noted that the summit was intentionally designed to bring educators, parents, community members and students together to share a variety of perspectives.

“This summit is meant to be an opportunity for conversation,” Hertzog said. “We want it to be an interactive experience where participants can ask questions, share their own experiences and start developing action plans to move forward in their own contexts.”

There is no fee to participate in the summit, but is required. The event will take place in Haggett Hall on the UW Seattle campus.

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction will provide free clock hours to educators in attendance; .
