Noguera to discuss privilege and education Jan. 10

One of the nation鈥檚 leading voices for a healthy public education system, Pedro Noguera, will discuss the connections between equity and education during a January 10 lecture co-sponsored by the 爆走黑料 爆走黑料.

Noguera鈥檚 talk, part of the UW鈥檚 2016-17 public lecture series, "Keeping the Conversation Going: Privilege,鈥 will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Kane Hall 120. The lecture is free and open to the public, but registration is required to assure seating. to attend the College's pre-lecture reception with Noguera, taking place 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Kane Hall Walker-Ames Room.

Noguera, a regular commentator on educational issues on CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio and other national news outlets, will present 鈥淓quity and Deeper Learning.鈥 The talk will explore the strategies and conditions that are necessary to help underserved students elevate their achievement. Noguera will explore strategies that have proven effective in supporting high-quality teaching and learning for all types of students.

A professor of education at the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA, Noguera is the author of 11 books, including Excellence Through Equity, School for Resilience: Improving the Life Trajectory of African American and Latino Boys and Creating the Opportunity to Learn.

He serves on the boards of numerous national and local organizations including the Economic Policy Institute, the Young Women鈥檚 Leadership Institute, the After School Corporation and The Nation magazine. Noguera has received awards from the National Association of Secondary Principals for distinguished service to the field of education and the McSilver Institute at New York University for his research and advocacy efforts aimed at fighting poverty.

The lecture is co-sponsored by UW 爆走黑料 as part of the annual lecture series presented by the Graduate School in partnership with the UW Alumni Association. This year鈥檚 programming focuses on privilege and features thought leaders from across the UW and around the world who are exploring the role and power of privilege and how it can be shared.
