±¬×ߺÚÁÏ

A May 2 event at the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ will highlight the work of two Native/Indigenous teacher education cohort programs that are partnering with tribal communities to center Native teachers, students, families and communities in education.

The program, sponsored by the Indigenous Education Initiatives and the of the UW ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ, is open to the public and will begin at 4 p.m. in the Walker-Ames Room in Kane Hall. A reception will proceed the program at 3:30 p.m. .

Featured speakers are:

• (Yakama), professor of Indigenous studies and director of the Sapsik'Ê·ałá (Teacher) Education Program at the University of Oregon.
• (Alutiiq), assistant professor of Indigenous studies in education and faculty in the Sapsik'Ê·ałá Education Program at the University of Oregon.
• (Diné), assistant professor of Indigenous education and director of the Indigenous Teacher Education Project at the University of Arizona.
• (Hopi), assistant professor of Indigenous education and co-director of the Indigenous Teacher Education Project at the University of Arizona.

The Indigenous Education Initiatives include academic programs and community partnerships that represent the College’s ongoing commitments to Native/Indigenous education and communities across the region.

The Banks Center for Educational Justice is a central location for partnerships, program development and collaborative research with early childhood through university educational settings that sustain Native, Black, Latinx, and Asian and Pacific Islander young people across Seattle and Washington state and beyond. The center honors long-time UW faculty member James A. Banks, founder and director of the Center for Multicultural Education, and founding UW Bothell faculty member, Cherry A. Banks.
