Job Title: Teacher/Director – South Whidbey Academy
Location: South Whidbey High School, Langley, WA
Reports To: Principal, South Whidbey High School
FTE Status: Full-time, Certificated
Salary: $69,429 – $140,416 (2024–25 Certificated Salary Schedule) plus 25 extended days
Start Date: 2025-2026 School Year
Position Overview
South Whidbey Academy (SWA) is a Title I alternative high school program located within South Whidbey High School. It is not an Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) program. Serving approximately 45 students, SWA supports those who benefit from nontraditional pathways to graduation. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced educator to lead this program. The Director provides instructional leadership, manages individualized student learning plans (SLPs), and collaborates with staff, families, and community partners to support student success. The role also includes coordination of Work-Based Learning opportunities for high school students across the district.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Program Oversight
● Serve as the instructional and programmatic leader of SWA
● Foster a school culture that promotes high expectations, belonging, flexibility, and support for all learners
● Develop, monitor, and update individualized Student Learning Plans (SLPs), ensuring they are accurately tracked and aligned to graduation requirements
● Ensure program compliance with Title I, district, and state policies and procedures
● Supervise and support instructional and classified staff assigned to SWA
● Oversee day-to-day operations and academic progress for approximately 45 enrolled students
● Demonstrated commitment to student success
● Regular daily attendance at school is an essential function of the position
● Utilize and manage effective credit retrieval systems and programs to support student progress toward graduation
Special Education & Student Services
● Apply knowledge of Special Education to collaborate effectively with case managers and support staff
● Coordinate services for the small number of students with IEPs or Section 504 Plans, in partnership with the district Special Services team
● Implement trauma-informed practices and appropriate behavioral supports
● Partner with internal and external agencies to ensure wraparound support when needed
Work-Based Learning Coordination
● Serve as the district's high school Work-Based Learning Coordinator
● Develop and sustain partnerships with local businesses, organizations, and community agencies
● Connect students with internships, job shadows, and career exploration experiences aligned with their learning plans
● Maintain required documentation and ensure compliance with OSPI Work-Based Learning standards
Communication & Collaboration
● Communicate regularly and proactively with students, families, staff, and community partners
● Collaborate with South Whidbey High School administration and counseling teams to align programming
● Represent SWA at district meetings, student support conferences, and external agency forums
Required Qualifications
● Valid Washington State Secondary Teaching Certificate
● Demonstrated experience in alternative education settings
● Background or training in Special Education
● Strong understanding of individualized student learning plans, credit retrieval systems, and graduation pathways
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills
● Proven ability to build strong relationships with students and families facing academic and social challenges
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience with Title I programs and schoolwide compliance
● Familiarity with OSPI Work-Based Learning regulations

● This position is compensated per the South Whidbey Education Association (SWEA) Certificated Salary Schedule: $69,429 – $140,416
● Also receives 15 extended days for program leadership, 8 extended days for Work-Based Learning responsibilities and 2 extra CTE days
