About the Wilmington Learning Collaborative and Christina School District

Created by Governor John Carney in 2022, the Wilmington Learning Collaborative (WLC) is a voluntary network of schools operating across the Christina, Brandywine, and Red Clay school districts, committed to improving educational outcomes and fostering positive change across schools in Wilmington, Delaware. The between the three school districts was created to establish a consistent learning experience for students, while simultaneously fostering the empowerment of educators, school leaders, and communities鈥攖hereby enhancing overall student outcomes within the City of Wilmington schools. Currently composed of eight unique school communities,  the WLC will serve approximately 3,000 students in grades PreK through 8th grade.  The WLC is a signature educational initiative designed to elevate community voice and school-based decision-making.

 

The Christina School District (CSD) is a Delaware public school system serving over 14,000 students and employing 3,300 people. Christina is one of four school districts serving students in the City of Wilmington, created in 1981 to satisfy a desegregation directive for the City of Wilmington and New Castle County. CSD has 3 early education centers, 14 elementary schools, 2 elementary/middle schools, 3 middle schools, and 3 traditional comprehensive high schools serving the City of Newark and its surrounding suburban areas as well as a portion of the City of Wilmington. 

This national search marks the launch of a collaborative approach to school leadership selection between the Christina School District and the Wilmington Learning Collaborative.

About the Principal /School Leader Role

The Alma Advisory Group is seeking two experienced school leaders to serve in one of the following schools: 

  • , home of the 鈥淏ulldogs,鈥 is an elementary and middle school serving nearly 600 students in grades 1 to 8 and located on the west side of Wilmington, Delaware. Bayard鈥檚 mission is to deliver a comprehensive and systematic school program, ensuring impeccable instruction and providing essential resources for all students to achieve academic success and age-appropriate social development. With a newly remodeled building (2023), complete with communal working spaces and a school-based health center in partnership with Nemours Children鈥檚 Health, the incoming leader will have an opportunity to work with the Christina School District and the Wilmington Learning Collaborative to revisit this school model and collaborate with its main feeder school, Pulaski Early Education Center (PreK & K), to determine the best educational structure for its school community.
  • is an elementary and middle school serving nearly 600 students in grades 1 to 8 and located on the east side of Wilmington, Delaware. Their mission is to foster an inclusive and culturally relevant environment where students can thrive both academically and personally. The Pritchett Academy is named after a highly respected educator and community leader and now occupies a state-of-the-art, brand-new facility opened in Fall 2024, the first new school facility built in the City of Wilmington in over 60 years. The founding principal of this school will have the opportunity to create the foundation of academic excellence, to establish Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy as a beacon of innovation and community connectedness, and to fulfill the legacy of Maurice Pritchett Sr.

Reporting to the CSD Director of Teaching and Learning in collaboration with the WLC鈥檚 Executive Director, the school leaders serving in this role must be willing to prioritize student-centered decision-making over the comfort of adults, to meet parents where they are, and to collaborate with city and state leaders and community partners.  S/he must have a proven track record of success in improving outcomes at historically underserved schools and building systems that uphold high expectations for the academic achievement of all students.

Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in a diverse, urban setting is required. Experience in a mid-sized metropolitan school district and/or state education agency is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of school administrative experience, principal experience preferred. 
  • Advanced degree in education with a concentration in one or more areas of specialization, i.e. curriculum and instruction, mathematics education, early childhood education, inclusive education.
  • Deep knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment, school operations, and multi-lingual and differently abled learner education. 
  • A clear and proven track record of improving academic outcomes at historically underserved schools.
  • Ability to navigate uncertainty and ambiguity in times of tremendous change, and to prioritize work efforts to achieve WLC mission.
  • Eligibility for State of Delaware Certification as a Principal.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset and unwavering belief that all children can achieve at high levels.
  • Successful experience with school improvement and turnaround leadership.
  • Experience building high-quality, highly functional teams with clear expectations for serving students and achieving student success.
