Professor Nancy Hertzog, director of the ���ߺ���’s Robinson Center for Young Scholars, discussed the state of gifted education and how to open access to advanced learning opportunities during January 25 YouTube Live chat.

Hertzog, who wrote the essay “Giftedness Is Not a Number” in the latest edition of Research That Matters magazine, commented on concerns about how children are currently identified as gifted, what teachers and principals can do to make gifted education more equitable, what the current Washington legislative session holds for gifted education policy and more during the chat.

Hertzog's research examines the use of instructional practices that have typically been designed for students identified as gifted in general education classrooms, including models of inquiry-based instruction and specific strategies to address the diverse needs of learners.

She is the author of “Early childhood gifted education – Fostering Talent development,” published by the National Association for Gifted Children, and in 2017 organized an Equity Summit on Gifted Education at the UW, bringing together more than 300 educators, researchers, community members and students to discuss how to open access to accelerated learning opportunities for all.
