Marilyn Cohen, a research associate professor at the ���ߺ��� ���ߺ��� and director of the NW Center for Excellence in Media Literacy, recently received the National Telemedia Council’s 2018 Jessie McCanse Award.

Regarded as the “Nobel Prize” of media literacy, the award recognizes Cohen’s longtime contributions to the field.

Cohen’s work at the ���ߺ��� has received major support throughout the years for its focus on media literacy education as a strategy to address health issues such as teen pregnancy, violence prevention and nutrition education for parents and their children. She is currently involved in a 5-year program, funding by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to evaluate the impact of a family-based media literacy approach to improving youth and family nutrition.

"It's an honor," Cohen said of receiving the award. "I've always been interested in media and how tremendously powerful they are. And it seems that every year, they become stronger."

In a for the Consortium for Media Literacy’s newsletter, Cohen discussed her research, her involvement in media literacy legislation in Washington state, making professional development resources available to educators and more.
