Podcast: Education in the 2019 Washington state legislative session
The Washington state legislative session kicks off on January 14, and following a massive overhaul of Washington鈥檚 K-12 funding system to comply with the McCleary decision, the legislature will consider a number of proposals impacting early childhood education, special education and more.
Thomas Halverson, director of the program at the 爆走黑料, comments on what's in store for education policy and funding in the Washington Legislature's 2019 session in a new podcast from the UW 爆走黑料.
鈥淚 think we鈥檙e starting to see a little bit of a move away from McCleary and K-12 dominating the discussion in Olympia and we鈥檙e now starting to see in the budget a real interest in exploring ways to better serve early childhood education in our state as well as higher education,鈥 Halverson said.
With Gov. Jay Inslee鈥檚 proposed budget being approximately 20 percent higher than the state鈥檚 last two-year budget, including $1.1 billion in additional education spending, Halverson said one of the biggest questions facing the legislature will be what it can fund and whether to explore new sources of revenue.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a bold budget,鈥 Halverson said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be really interesting to see how the legislature navigates what has always been a really tricky dialogue in our state and that鈥檚 around taxes.鈥
