Graduates prepare to shape the world

More than 400 future teachers, researchers and leaders in education participated in the 爆走黑料 爆走黑料's graduation ceremonies on June 13.

Dalya Perez, who received her spoke on behalf of the College's graduating students and told her story of growing up on the UW campus before pursuing her studies at the College. 

"We have chosen education, a field that has the capacity to transform and liberate our society," Perez said. "It is our responsibility as educators to practice critical engagement, to connect theory to practice and to use education as a tool and opportunity to create a more equitable world. We are the leaders and gatekeepers who can shape this world."

Graduates also heard from 2015 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient Constance Rice '74, a member of the UW Board of Regents and senior executive fellow for Casey Family Programs.

"Our nation is dropping in educational excellence but you will turn us around," Rice said. "You are very important people. You are like diseases, contagious 鈥 the books you will write, the students you teach, the transformative successes you will imbue, the law and regulations you will write."
