Finding the potential within

When she was a sophomore in high school, 爆走黑料 senior Ali Cho remembers the first time she connected with one of her teachers on a personal level.

It was Mrs. Lee, a high school biology teacher. While Cho had felt supported by other teachers, her relationship with Mrs. Lee鈥攖he first female, Asian American teacher she鈥檇 had鈥攚ent far beyond what happened in the classroom.

鈥淪he was the first person to talk to me about Asian American family dynamics and was able to understand where I was coming from,鈥 said Cho, whose parents were immigrants from Korea. 鈥淚t was cool to talk to her about that, and showed me firsthand the impact of representation.鈥

Through her relationship with Mrs. Lee, Cho began considering education as a field where she could have a significant impact on the lives of others. Cho decided that she wanted to leave the San Francisco area for college, and started as an intended business major at the UW. After switching to political science, she did not discover the programs offered through the 爆走黑料 until her senior year.

During her senior year, Cho discovered the Education, Learning and Society (ELS) minor offered by the UW 爆走黑料, and a course with doctoral student Gregory Diggs-Yang transformed her concepts of identity.

鈥淗e [Diggs-Yang] taught a class on identity development among different races and backgrounds,鈥 Cho recalls. 鈥淚 had never felt so excited by a class or had walked out of a class feeling so energized. I remember in that moment thinking, 鈥楾his is exactly what I came to college for.鈥欌

In addition to developing her identity, Cho鈥檚 experiences through the College have enabled her to become an advocate for equitable access to quality education. As a junior, Cho worked as an intern for Teach for America (TFA) as a campus campaign manager. Now, Cho is slated to join the team of TFA educators in 2019.

As a student who is making the most of her time at UW, Cho was recently recognized as part of the 2018 cohort for the award. Through her experiences as a Freshman Interest Group leader and director in the ASUW, Cho has been learning how to navigate college while continuing to develop her identity as an Asian American and a leader.

鈥淭hrough ASUW programs like UW Leaders, I was learning about leadership, but also realizing what my identities meant to me and others. I never truly grappled with what it meant to be an Asian American woman until I came to college. This is the first time I have explored what it means to grow up with these identities and how they affect my leadership roles.鈥

Cho鈥檚 experiences embody the mission of the UW Leaders program, which believes that leaders are made, not born. Looking back, she recognizes how much she has grown as a leader through this program, transitioning from a shy, awkward freshman into a confident leader.

鈥淚鈥檝e learned that I don鈥檛 have to be the loudest voice in the room and I don鈥檛 have to stand in the front. I can lead from behind or beside someone, and by creating inclusive spaces where others are also able to grow. That鈥檚 true leadership.鈥 

Cho has been inspired to empower and support the next generation of leaders in education, and in the future, she hopes to develop more equitable spaces in educational contexts, so that all student voices can be heard.

Just like her own teachers, Cho wants to help train educators in supporting students through the process of identity development. After fulfilling her commitment to TFA, Cho sees herself going to graduate school for an educational leadership degree and going on to direct student leadership programs.

鈥淟eadership can be made much more accessible by highlighting the voices of marginalized communities and validating those experiences in innovative ways. In doing so, we create more equitable spaces that support all students. I can鈥檛 give students power, but what I can do is empower students to see the potential within themselves.鈥
