Central Kitsap educator receives UW mentoring award
Respected Central Kitsap School District administrator Chris Wyatt has been honored for her work helping develop fellow administrators and teacher leaders with this year's John W. Morefield Mentoring Award, presented by the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ's .
Wyatt, director of student services at Central Kitsap, received the award in recognition of her exemplary work as a mentor to rising educational leaders. A significant feature of the Danforth program, which prepares experienced educators to take on prominent leadership roles in K-12 school systems, is an intensive, year-long internship supervised by at least one experienced mentor principal or program administrator. Through their internships, students engage in the practical application of theory and learn about the problems, opportunities and dilemmas of educational leadership.
As director of student services, Wyatt supports the academic and social development of more than 11,000 students in a 110 square-mile region surrounding Silverdale. A graduate of UW's Danforth program herself, Wyatt previously served as principal of Central Kitsap's Ridgetop Junior High School and was named Career and Technical Teacher of the Year by the Washington Association for Career and Technical Education.
John Bryz-Gornia, assistant principal at Oakland Bay Senior High School and recipient of the 2013-2014 Black Hills Regional Assistant Principal of the Year award presented by the Association of Washington Middle Level Principals, nominated Wyatt for the award and noted her commitment to mentoring colleagues interested in becoming leaders themselves.
"She guided, prodded, challenged and yet always supported her charges," Bryz-Gornia said. "Because Christina Wyatt helped shape my concepts of courage in educational leadership, I am the assistant principal of a school whose population is 70 percent free and reduced lunch. I am the assistant principal of a school which won the 2011 Washington Achievement Award."
