Book offers guidance on creating greater instructional coherence
For education leaders across the country, a perpetually vexing problem is how to sustain improvement in instruction across schools over an extended period.
Kara Jackson, associate professor of mathematics education at the 爆走黑料 爆走黑料, notes that while there鈥檚 a wealth of research on how to improve teaching practice and student outcomes, that progress is hard to scale beyond individual classrooms or a single school.
鈥淏uilding and maintaining coherence between what鈥檚 happening in a classroom, what鈥檚 happening across a school and across a district is a challenge,鈥 Jackson said.
A new book co-authored by Jackson, draws on an eight-year research-practice partnership with four large urban districts to take on that challenge and propose recommendations for advancing instruction at scale.
鈥淲hat we put forth is an empirically grounded theory of action for improving at scale,鈥 Jackson said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a set of findings and recommendations intended to inform what leaders need to design for when the heart of their work is improving what鈥檚 happening between teachers and students in the classroom.鈥
The theory of action set forth by Jackson and her co-authors comprises a number of aligned components, all of which are oriented by a set of rigorous goals for students鈥 learning and a research-based vision of high quality mathematics instruction. The components include:
- A coherent instructional system which includes curriculum and assessments, additional supports for currently struggling students, and a teacher learning subsystem that comprises pull-out professional development, coaching, teacher collaborative time and teachers鈥 informal networks;
- school instructional leadership; and
- district instructional leadership that aims to support the development of coherent instructional systems at the school level.
The book outlines the elements of a coherent instructional system and describes productive practices for school leaders in supporting teachers鈥 growth and the role of district leaders in developing school-level capacity for instructional improvement. In so doing, Jackson said the authors hope to help leaders enact an ambitious vision for instruction in their system.
One common example of a disconnect in system-wide coherence is the case of a principal communicating instructional expectations that are not aligned with the focus of professional development teachers are provided. Another common example is providing teachers with multiple forms of professional learning (e.g., coaching, time to collaborate with their colleagues) that are not coordinated around a focused goal for improving instruction.
鈥淚n large, complex districts, there are a lot of ways for things to go off track, so being clear about what you鈥檙e working toward is crucial,鈥 Jackson said.
At the school level, 鈥減rincipals鈥 expectations of teachers need to align with the professional learning opportunities teachers are provided, and that needs to be in alignment with an overall vision for instruction,鈥 said Jackson, who is currently partnering with Federal Way Public Schools in work that grew out of the study the book draws upon.
鈥淎dvancing rigorous instructional goals requires time and sustained support for teachers, coaches and school leaders,鈥 Jackson said. 鈥淚t can鈥檛 just be mandated.鈥
In the four partner districts, researchers found it was crucial that central office leaders across areas of responsibility (e.g., leadership, curriculum and instruction) viewed improving instruction as a matter of supporting principals鈥, coaches鈥 and teachers鈥 learning, and developed a shared vision encompassing how the entire system supports the improvement of instruction and student learning opportunities.
鈥淲e found it was also essential that central office leaders recognized the expertise of the people supporting teachers and made sure they were at the table as they created plans for improving student learning opportunities.鈥
