Dr. Larry Nyland, a distinguished local educator who earned his Ph.D. in from ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ's ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ, has been selected to lead Seattle Public Schools on a permanent basis after serving as interim superintendent since August. The Seattle School Board approved the move during its Dec. 10 meeting.

For more than three decades, Nyland has led school districts across Washington. He has overseen rising graduation rates and test scores, resolved conflicts between teachers and school boards, and won recognition as the state's Superintendent of the Year in 2007 while serving the Marysville School District, a post he held for nine years before becoming a leadership coach at Learning Unlimited in 2013.

Earlier in his career, Nyland served as chief academic officer and human resources director at Highline Public Schools, superintendent at Shoreline Schools and Pasco School District, and director of the superintendent preparation program at Seattle Pacific University. He also held numerous state leadership roles including president of the Washington Association of School Administrators, the Washington Alliance of Better Schools and the Washington Coalition of Educational Administration Programs.

Nyland earned his bachelor's degree and teaching certification at UW before going on to receive his Ph.D. in educational leadership from the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ in 1981.
