Hailey Capps
Through the program, I gained a deeper understanding of the higher education landscape, learned how to create more inclusive environments, and developed strategies to foster a sense of belonging for students.
Can you start by introducing yourself and telling us which program you completed?
My name is Hailey, I use she/her pronouns, and I’m an alum of the Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Policy (EDFLP) Master of Education program, where I specialized in Leadership and Higher Education. I currently work as an adviser in the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ at the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ.
What inspired you to choose Educational Foundations, Leadership and Policy and how has it shaped your growth.
As an undergrad at UW, I was deeply involved in student leadership roles, which sparked my passion for supporting college students. One of my mentors, who had completed the EDFLP program, spoke highly of her experience, and my academic adviser also encouraged me to consider graduate school.
Their guidance helped me see how EDFLP aligned perfectly with my goal of working in higher education. Through the program, I gained a deeper understanding of the higher education landscape, learned how to create more inclusive environments, and developed strategies to foster a sense of belonging for students. I also grew into a more equity-minded leader — a perspective that continues to shape how I support and engage with students in my work today.
Looking back, what was the most meaningful or memorable part of your experience in the program?
Looking back, the relationships I built with classmates and faculty were the most meaningful part of my experience. I still keep in touch with one of my cohort mates — we used to meet for coffee before class to talk through the job search process and encourage each other. That peer-to-peer connection made such a difference, and I truly believe your classmates become a valuable source of support and inspiration throughout your time in the program.
