Graduate Student General Scholarships

We offer a limited number of need- and merit-based scholarships to graduate students each year. Most of these scholarships are made possible through the generous gifts of alumni and other supporters.

Award amount

Most scholarship awards range from $2,000 to $5,000. They are intended to provide supplemental financial assistance, rather than major financial support.

Eligibility

  • Be enrolled in a ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ program
  • Be working toward an M.Ed., Ed.S., Ed.D. or Ph.D.
  • For consideration for need-based scholarships:
    • Complete and submit the FAFSA or WASFA
    • Use the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ code: #003798

Application process

Applications are completed online:

  3. Log in with your UW NetID and password
  4. Locate the Graduate Student Scholarship Application option
  5. Click 'Apply' and complete all steps

Selection process

Applications will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Academic history shows merit:
    • Strong academic record, consistency with goal statement, academic awards or honors
  • Goals related to education:
    • Clear, insightful goals articulating a contribution to research or practice
  • Life experience:
    • Your experience is linked broadly to education or learning
    • Clear relationship between experience and goals
    • Nonacademic awards and experience
    • Service and volunteer work
    • Experience with diverse groups or cultures
    • Obstacles overcome
  • Potential to contribute to field of education:
    • Collegiality, enthusiasm, professional involvement, leadership, diverse talents or background

Incoming students are generally given first consideration, to assist them during their first quarters of study. If awards are not granted to incoming students, continuing students will receive consideration.

If you submitted a FAFSA or WASFA, financial need is only used to determine eligibility for our need-based scholarships. Merit-based scholarships do not use your financial information as criteria.
